Emotionally Healthy

Standard definition of emotions is known by everyone, but still we haven't been able to fully understand what it actually means. This may be because this word doesn't have definitive boundaries, rather a flexible one. EMOTIONS ARE LIKE WATER. If we have to explain the effect of emotions, then this might be a perfect analogy.

Just like water, the presence of emotions is very important in our lives. It enhances our day to day experience, minute to major. Just like water bodies are regularly managed and regulated by dams so that during any environmental disturbance the devastation can be controlled, similarly we need to learn to manage and regulate emotions so that during an emotional disturbance, our emotions don't drown us.

The ability to cope with both positive and negative emotions, which includes your awareness of them, is called Emotional Health. In other words it is a person’s ability to accept and manage feelings through challenge and change.  Emotional health includes both emotional intelligence and emotional regulation. Someone who is emotionally healthy can allow their emotions to be digestible. Our mundane hassles are a testament of how effectively we can manage our emotions. Our daily tasks offer opportunities to practice responses, rather than reactions to allow our emotional health to flourish.

Poor emotional health can often lead us to resort to poor coping mechanisms.  For example, some people enjoy smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol as a way to relieve stress. The result of emotional dysregulation and poor coping mechanisms are tied to physical health. People who experience great amounts of stress and negative emotions will sometimes develop other health problems.

The first step towards having a healthy emotional health is to acknowledge your emotions, just the way they are. We often try to discard what we are feeling and our emotions. Being emotionally healthy does not mean always feeling happy, and it does not mean never having bad things happen. Being emotionally healthy also doesn’t mean ignoring negative situations and feelings; instead, emotional wellness is to be aware of all of your emotions, accept the good and the bad, and maintain a positive outlook despite life’s ups and downs and twists and turns.

Here are some ways to maintain your emotional health:

  1. Living a balanced lifestyle. Try to have a good balance between work and your personal life, activity and resting, and moderation in all things.

  2. Stay connected. Community is important. Plan regular shared time with friends and family members. Virtual connections are good, but seeing someone in person once in a while is helpful too.

  3. Meditate. Meditation helps you to notice your thoughts and emotions, which is key to emotional wellness.

  4. Watch how you talk about yourself. Negative self-talk can become a self-fulfilling prophecy, or just put you in a negative mindset. Work on creating a positive image of yourself with your words. Your thoughts may soon follow.

  5. Set goals and celebrate your achievements. Give yourself something to strive for, and celebrate your accomplishments to build self-esteem and positive feelings about yourself.
